Flexible wastewater treatment for a growing residential development
Northgate Estate required a wastewater treatment solution capable of treating wastewater to a final quality compliant with Zimbabwe Standards. The development also required operational flexibility so that treatment capacity could be adjusted according to changing wastewater flows.
SewTreat proposed a 3 MLD wastewater treatment plant comprising two independent 1.5 MLD treatment trains. The system can accommodate wastewater flows from approximately 250 KLPD up to the full 3 MLD capacity, while the treated final water is designed for reuse in irrigation.

THE CHALLENGE
Wastewater treatment capacity needed to scale with the development
Northgate Estate required more than a fixed-capacity wastewater treatment plant. As wastewater flows changed with the development, the treatment system needed to maintain reliable performance while allowing effective treatment capacity to be increased or reduced according to demand.
At the same time, the final treated water needed to meet the required Zimbabwe Standards and provide a suitable resource for irrigation reuse.

SEWTREAT’S SOLUTION
A 3 MLD wastewater treatment plant with two flexible treatment trains
SewTreat proposed a 3 MLD wastewater treatment plant comprising two independent 1.5 MLD treatment trains.
Each treatment train incorporates supplementary flow-through piping at the lower levels. This allows the effective treatment capacity to be reduced when required, giving Northgate Estate the flexibility to operate the plant according to actual wastewater flows rather than continuously operating at maximum capacity.
The configuration enables an operating range from approximately 250 KLPD up to the full 3 MLD capacity. Treated final water is designed to comply with Zimbabwe Green Normal Standards and can be reused for irrigation.
