Sustainable Water Management: Sewtreat’s Breakthrough at Pick n Pay Eastport

Water scarcity and rising costs are pressing challenges for businesses across South Africa. Sewtreat, a leader in sustainable water management since 2016, is transforming how commercial facilities secure their water supply. Our innovative project at the Pick n Pay Eastport Logistics Park near O.R. Tambo Airport demonstrates the power of rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, and commercial water recycling to deliver water security solutions and substantial savings.

With over 250 projects across 15 African countries, Sewtreat’s expertise has earned nominations for the CEBA Built by the Best Awards and recognition as Southern Africa’s most innovative water treatment company by the African Excellence Awards. Let’s explore how our cost-effective water treatment solutions at Eastport set a new standard for sustainability, benefiting businesses, communities, and the environment.

Why Sustainable Water Management Matters

Commercial and industrial operations rely on consistent water access, but municipal supplies are often unreliable and expensive. Sustainable water management reduces dependence on external sources, lowers costs, and supports environmental conservation. Sewtreat’s decentralized systems provide water security solutions tailored to diverse sectors, from logistics to residential complexes.

At Pick n Pay’s Eastport Logistics Park, our rainwater harvesting and wastewater treatment systems ensure operational reliability while achieving significant cost savings. Learn more about our approach in our detailed case studies.

Sewtreat’s Innovative Systems

The Eastport Logistics Park, with its 160,000-square-meter rooftop, the world’s largest for rainwater harvesting, showcases Sewtreat’s expertise in commercial water recycling. We implemented two advanced systems to meet the facility’s water needs for refrigeration, toilet flushing, and truck washing.

Rainwater Harvesting for a Reliable Water Supply

Our rainwater harvesting system captures water from the expansive rooftop, channeling it into a 3-megaliter attenuation dam. The water undergoes a multi-stage treatment process, including:

Activated Filter Media (AFM) Filtration: Removes suspended solids for cleaner water.
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Treatment: Absorbs organic and inorganic pollutants.
Sodium Hypochlorite Disinfection: Ensures compliance with strict quality standards.

Processing up to 300,000 liters daily, the treated water feeds a 1-megaliter underground emergency tank. During low rainfall, an automatic valve supplements with municipal water, maintaining water security solutions. The tank’s 850-kiloliter capacity supports operations for up to three days without external supply. Read more about our water treatment solutions.

Wastewater Treatment for Truck Washbay Recycling

The truck washbay’s wastewater treatment system recycles 150,000 liters daily, minimizing municipal water use. The process includes:

Coarse Screening and Grit Trap: Removes large particles and allows sedimentation.
Multi-Stage Oil Separator: Eliminates oil from the water stream.
Biological Treatment: Uses aerobic tanks and a clarifier to digest organic materials and remove nitrogen.
AFM and GAC Polishing: Ensures high-quality water for reuse.

The treated water is stored for truck washing, creating a closed-loop system that exemplifies commercial water recycling.

Tangible Benefits of Sewtreat’s Solutions

Sewtreat’s systems deliver economic, environmental, and operational benefits, making cost-effective water treatment a reality for Pick n Pay.

Significant Cost Savings

The rainwater harvesting system saves over R2.5 million annually, with a 22-month payback period. The wastewater treatment system reduces water costs by 71%, yielding R2.2 million in yearly savings and a 14-month ROI. Together, these systems generate over R4.7 million in annual savings, proving the value of sustainable water management.

Environmental Conservation

By prioritizing commercial water recycling, the Eastport project conserves 238 million liters of water annually – equivalent to 95 Olympic-sized swimming pools. This reduction in municipal water use supports sustainable resource management and environmental stewardship.

Uninterrupted Operations

Sewtreat’s systems ensure water security solutions through emergency storage and automated backups. Our expert technicians provide ongoing maintenance, guaranteeing reliability and peace of mind.
